The sea and travel inspire Maximilie Hareng, who has made nautical charts her preferred medium for her charcoal drawings. She is presenting her first exhibition, Eau-delà, in Guilers (Finistère), until June 30.

Maximilie Hareng, 25, was introduced to art by her two grandmothers. "One paints for pleasure, and the other, who was my kindergarten teacher, was the first to introduce me to several great artists," she says.

Born in Caen, the artist also has a love for travel. Following her parents, she lived in Normandy, Romania, and Saint-Etienne before settling in Brest ten years ago.

After studying graphic design, the young woman chose to fully dedicate herself to art. She draws with charcoal, mainly on nautical charts found in flea markets, but also on marbled paper backgrounds created using the Japanese Sumimagashi technique by another artist, Sandra Verré.

The encounter between man and the ocean

Until June 30, Maximilie Hareng is presenting thirteen of her paintings, originals and prints, as well as two digital drawings, at the Guilthèque. Charcoal particularly appeals to the artist, who enjoys "working in detail with all the nuances from white to black and experimenting with different effects."

Her world gives pride of place to the theme of water and the encounter between man and the ocean. "The interplay of shadow and movement brings your drawings to life," praised Thierry Colas, Deputy for Culture, at the vernissage on Friday.

For the launch of her very first exhibition titled Eau-delà, Maximilie Hareng was surrounded by her family who has "always supported her in her artistic whims!" Soon, her works will also be on display in Carantec, where her parents are preparing to open their art gallery named Seren.

Upon request, Maximilie Hareng, who has a stock of 200 nautical charts, also creates personalized illustrations for individuals, taking into account the theme or inspiration suggested to her.

Until June 30 , during Guilthèque opening hours, free admission. Contact: maximilieart.com
