Brest native Maximilie Hareng, 26, creates charcoal drawings on nautical charts. My creations are inspired by characters related to the sea, like surfers, bathers. I integrate them according to the contours of the coast," she explains. Her great-grandfather drew portraits, her grandmother was a painter, and Maximilie has been drawing since she was very young. Today, she makes a living from her passion for art.

Some of her creations are the result of commissions. This was the case after a meeting with Juliette Quillevere, Camille Metra, and Nicolas Durand at a creators' market in Brest. The three met about ten years ago in Wellington, New Zealand. Since their return, they have opened a cafe-restaurant, Le Welli Chéri, on Rue Pierre-Sémard, in Saint-Marc.

Characters representing Maoris

I was drawn to their story and had the idea of creating paintings, always on nautical charts, with characters representing Maoris, these indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand," adds Maximilie Hareng.

By feeding artificial intelligence various elements (man, woman, Maori, elderly, chin tattoo), Maximilie Hareng opted for two portrait proposals. For the rest, it is the artist's talent at work. Maximilie draws with charcoal, including a multitude of details for hair, wrinkles, and all the shades of black and white to give the drawing a 3D impression.

The artist is also fond of supports such as the Japanese suminagashi background, a paper marbling technique," and she is considering clay modeling for that 3D aspect that makes creations visible from all sides. All her creations are guaranteed not to be generated by artificial intelligence.
